Culture & Language: A Lifelong Pursuit

I like to think my interest in foreign languages and cultures was born from my early exposure to ancient languages and cultures. Looking back, I can see similarities between Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and Japanese kanji in how each hold complex concepts within a single or series of characters, both complex and beautiful.

CSUMB’s Japanese Language and Culture major drew my attention not just for the school's misty shores, but also the strength of the program which was established by one of the developers of the AP Japanese exam. As a young program, it promised innovation and personal instruction with smaller classes, in addition to a study abroad program. One of the greatest benefits of transferring to CSUMB was getting to work with exchange students from Japan. Not only did I gain confidence in my speaking ability, but getting to work with them helped me develop a greater sensitivity towards others; diversity is a big buzzword both at CSUMB and the Bay Area, where I am from.

I started to learn about the culture as my initial motivation, but as I began to create relationships with native speakers, the desire to communicate became the driving force of my studies. I am looking forward to strengthening Japanese-American relations and promoting understanding in the workplace.
