Reflective Narrative
This course contributed to the fulfillment of MLO 1
(Language & Communication), as it introduced Japanese business culture.
This course taught polite forms of speech, such as Honorific and Humble forms,
how to properly exchange business cards, business etiquette from the call to
the email thanking the client, and a general sensitivity to international
business practices. This class equally emphasized the importance of verbal and
non-verbal communication and highlighted the importance of “in” and “out”
groups, as well as seniority within the workplace. We created a group video project overviewing all the
important business practices we learned in this class, since they potentially be crucial to our future careers. Mannerisms, proper
terms of address, attire - Japanese white-collar businesses appear to
place an important emphasis on these pre-determined structures and formality to
create successful relations between companies.
