Reflective Narrative
My Pre-Capstone class prepared me for the Research aspect of this MLO. For my senior project, I have refined my academic researching skills (MLO 4.1) to find the most relevant possible information to present. Since my project is more of a scientific nature (with a survey), becoming familiar with the particularities of APA was essential. The most challenging part of MLO 4.2 was researching in Japanese. Without a lot of the resources I rely on in English, it takes a lot longer to pinpoint the information I need. However, researching on Government websites proved invaluable, since I was working on topics relating to Education.
I created a survey to collect data for my original research project through Google Forms, fulfilling MLO 4.3. Besides the obvious learning curve of a new format, one of the most challenging aspects of the survey was making sure I was consistent between English and Japanese versions. Even after checking multiple times, there were a few manageable discrepancies, which, through arranging the data in an appropriate chart, wouldn’t harm the integrity of the information presented.
Given the chance and funding, I would like to next research the relationship between a student’s perceived level of proficiency to their actual tested proficiency with a relevant/recognized proficiency test. In addition, with more time, I would like to explore a variety of potential factors, in particular psychological factors, which might affect students’ beliefs about proficiency.
