Reflective Narrative
This course contributed to the fulfillment of MLO 3 (Secondary Culture), since I learned about Latin American culture. I learned not through examination of their literature or festival customs, but through a close look at their long and tumultuous history. As part of this class I wrote two essays - one focusing on the chaotic beginnings of European Latin America and it’s effects on the natives based on a movie (“The Mission”), and the other talking about more recent issues that still affects today’s society (based on the themes in “The Official Story”). This class has provided me insight on how chaotic periods and foreign influence affect a society, but these concepts could also be expanded beyond just comparing Latin American and Japanese cultures. As our neighbors, this course has also served as a global citizenship class, helping me to become informed not only of modern issues within Latin America, but also the long reaching affects of history and my own country’s role in that history.
