REFLECTIVE NARRATIVE
This
course contributed to the fulfillment of MLO 1 (Language & Communication),
as it introduced, in Japanese, complex but similar grammar points by comparing
them in sentences, using context to gain meaning and understanding. In
addition, this course overviewed the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet),
which allows anyone to pronounce foreign words dictated in IPA. Particular
focus was put on proper pronunciation of Japanese language, including common
pitch-accent patterns. We frequently listened and “Shadowed” Japanese native
speakers to develop proper pronunciation, and recorded these efforts. One of
the challenges I faced during that unit was matching my good pronunciation with
what was being taught; it was a slow, frustrating process to slow down and
“hear” the cadences of the language. However, persistence and careful work,
including helping my fellow classmates, crystallized my understanding of the
subject.
